South Maroubra carnival

South Maroubra carnival Saturday 3rd December 2011

As some extension to this junior carnival, Under 15’s and Under 17’s were invited to attend so portions of Coogee senior club attended the South Maroubra carnival on Saturday. From what I saw on the beach, we had some reasonable competition for our Under 15’s but turn out for Under 17’s was disappointing.

A small contingent of our board paddlers attended this carnival. Conditions for water arena was ideal for competition given the week just had. A light south west wind with a small south 1-2 foot swell. For some reason the referee decided the swim should equal the board paddle. Many disgruntled competitors were not please, however they certainly benefited from a good long hit out. Unfortunately I saw none of the water events, however, Clay Canterella performed well to take out third place in both the Under 15 surf race and the board race. Our under 17 board relay headed by Jamie Bargenda put the team into a well placed lead on the first change, followed by Dan Laing who maintained and held off a spirited fight from South Maroubra along with some under 15 teams. Young Clayton was put under pressure right to the beach but he maintained his composure to run in second for the silver placing. The team put in a fine performance in beating some notable clubs. Not a bad result for two first year under 17 paddlers and a 14 year old. Well done Andy and the boys. Under 15 and under 17 water results generally were as follows;

U17 Board Race

Jamie Bargenda 4th

Dan Laing 5th

U17 Board Relay

Jamie Bargenda, Dan Laing, Clayton Canterella – 2nd

I spent my time at this carnival at the beach sprint arena and was pleasantly surprised to see Coogee juniors competing extremely well at this. There were a number of individual results. I knew very few of the Coogee juniors competing at this carnival. I saw a young girl named Alexandra win her Under 9 or 10 event. I saw Will Harrison finish third in his Under 13 race and then break down with a groin injury in his relay but courageously finished the race in some great pain over the final 20 metres. Another girls team in the Under 9 (I think) won their relay, and what also looked like the Under 12’s or U13’s girls relay put their opposition totally to the sword. They looked real good in strength and technique. In the boys relays, Our Under 11’s cruised home to victory, and the Under 13’s were second.

Much easier for me to relate what happened in the Under 15’s and Under 17’s since I personally train these teams. In the under 17 Flags, Ben Morgan took home a silver medal and Joey Michaels a bronze. Sean O’Byrne won silver and Nic Bergaud bronze in the under 15’s. Sean competed with tenacity and was very close for the last flag. All our under 15 boys did well in the flags. Tom Fagan and Ben McDonald finished just outside the medal hunt in 4th and 5th place (but not sure who was which).

This effort was bettered in the sprints. The boys had to run twice because the finish posts failed to work properly. Sean O’Byrne won the race and Ewan Breese was second. Nic Begaud was not far off the pace in fourth place with Ben McDonald also close behind in fifth. Tom Fagan performed very well the first time round being very close to our winning combination but suffered a leg cramp in the second race.

These boys creamed the opposition in their relay. Nic Begaud ran the first leg and just headed the field to the first change. Ben McDonald picked up a good 5 metres at the changover and the race was done for all money at this point. The under 15’s won their relay by about 20 metres.
