Sunday Events - 9/11/2014

It was a very busy day on Sunday at Coogee Beach. Please see my pictorial summary of the day.

The morning pretty much started with the Randwick Shield and so far as I could see Coogee had no chance to win this again after a difficult start to the race saw us in fourth position early on. We recovered well to cross the line in third place. I suspect a DQ may have found us second.

Next we had well attended training sessions with our board paddlers, R&R and Sprinters.

The sprinters, after much grumbling, joined in for the handicap surf race where they encountered a packed field of swimmers. Our director of Sunday races, Tim Green, has this event really humming along, so if you are looking for something to do for 20 minutes on a Sunday morning before the coffee and croissant, head to the southern end of the beach and get your name down for your handicap. This week’s winner was Jack Cuthbert who is seen here proudly showing off his winning prize.

Last weekend the competition season kick-off was well attended. She may these days belong to the world, but Jessica Thornton showed she is firstly a Coogee athlete when she also attended this function. Club President forced her hand to make her step up on stage and relate her winning Olympic performance to us all.

A special mention also to Michael Parsons who really has the Minnows beach sprinters pumping at training on Tuesday’s at Coogee Oval. Thanks for all your hard work Michael. Sorry it didn’t quite work for us in the Randwick Shield but look out for Coogee come State Titles.
